Women Who Dared, Written by Linda Skeers, Illustrated by Livi Gosling

52 stories of fearless daredevils, adventurers & rebels. Amazing, daring, and dangerously brave women who are rarely mentioned in our history books.

Looking for a text that shatters boundaries and supports female triumphs? Look no further! Meet a young girl raised by a single mother in Harlem who became a highly educated North and South Pole sensation, the first woman from Ghana to obtain her nautical captain’s license, a Japanese woman who became a mountaineering marvel, an Iraqi librarian who risked her life to protect books, and the first Native American women to become a Marine…  just to name a few!

Use this book as a powerful read-aloud for primary grades to teach lived experiences of others, challenging their open-mindedness; while dueling as a tactile piece for children to explore the vivid illustrations and imagine how those uniquely apply to them. This book holds single page biographies ideal for middle grade exploration.

Consider pairing this book with social justice standards as it addresses how people’s multiple identities interact and create unique and complex individuals. This is a collection of powerful individuals who did not let social constraints, bias, or injustices stop them from achieving personal accomplishments.

Enjoy!

  1. I love this! So versatile- can be for read alouds, mentor text, research, identity and intersectionality work, etc. It reminds me of the other book you shared, All By Herself.
