This children’s book wonderfully illustrates historical and current protesters who have stood up to injustices in America.

Emilie Easton’s inspiration for this story grew from her cousins who attended Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. In 2018, a shooter barged through their school. The effects of this school massacre ripped through the United States similar to most injustices in our society. So Emily decided to write this book to showcase our nation’s history of activism to children by creating these ABCs of activists in our country.

From Samuel Adams and Cesar Chavez to Jazz Jennings and the Parkland students who organized the March For Our Lives protest, this book illustrates these heroic protesters standing up for what they believed in. ENOUGH! 20 Protesters Who Changed America shines a light on many activists who might not be recognized, especially in recent history, including Gilbert Baker, Colin Kaepernick, and America Ferrera.

This book is an excellent resource for all educators from grades k-5. If you want to skim the surface with the younger grades, read the story and discuss the illustrations. This will serve you and your students. However, if you want to dive deeper, the book’s final few pages include a brief history behind each protester and why they said ENOUGH!

Overall, ENOUGH! 20 Protesters Who Changed America, introduced activism to students through detailed illustrations.

  1. This book seems really cool, Jane! I appreciate that it touches on activists of the past and also modern day activists. I feel like activism and protest are really important for younger people to learn about, especially when books like this can de-stigmatize and dismantle the thoughts surrounding those heavy topics. Thanks for a great review!
